When I was 14, I announced to my family that I wanted to study <a data-mce-href="https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/etzel-carde%C3%B1a" href="https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/etzel-carde%C3%B1a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">parapsychology</a>. The idea of exploring the unexplained—the dreams that whisper truths, the spirits that linger just beyond our sight—lit a fire in me. But my declaration was met with laughter, a chorus of skepticism that snuffed out my budding curiosity. They didn’t mean to be cruel; it was just too far-fetched for them. Yet, the universe has a way of teaching us what we need to know, even when the world dismisses it.That same year, my great-grandmother—Nana—passed away. The night she died, she visited me. I woke to the weight of her presence at the side of my bed, her hand, warm and steady, contrasting with the cold, hard hand I would hold a few days later at the funeral home. “Everything will be okay,” she said, her voice soft but certain. I didn’t question it then; it felt as real as the sheets beneath me. I don't question it now. &nbsp;The night before her death, I’d dreamt of my father’s mother having a heart attack. In my dream, I’d mixed up the grandmothers—dreams are funny like that, slippery and layered with meaning.Decades later, the dreams still come, unsolicited and uncanny. Recently, I woke from a vivid one: my stepfather, clutching his chest, a heart attack stealing his breath. I scribbled it down, heart pounding, and spent the next day or two wondering who it might be. My genetic father? I just couldn’t see my stepfather dying like that—it didn’t make sense. Was it my past husband’s dad, who’d been unwell? The answer came three weeks later when Steve—a local musician and humanitarian here in New Mexico—passed away suddenly. Steve wasn’t family by blood, but he’d been a friend and father like figure since I moved here three years ago. He’d shown me kindness, checking in on me, even stopping by my studio not long ago to tease, “Why don’t you come see me anymore?” Then, just like that, he was gone. Another dream woven into reality. I went back to the voice recording of the dream to check the date after hearing the news. The dream happened February 4th. Steve died February 6th. RIP Steve. Thank you for your kindness and joyful heart. &lt;3I’ve had many dreams like this—glimpses of what’s to come that I can’t quite shake. They’re not always clear-cut; they twist and turn, leaving me to piece them together after the fact. But they’ve taught me to listen, to trust that there’s more to this world than what we can touch or prove. This brings me to a fascinating yet short video I stumbled across on <a data-mce-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac9ZhnFbeQE" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac9ZhnFbeQE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YouTube, “Journeying Beyond the Veil” </a>In it, the creators dive into the mysteries of consciousness, death, and what might lie beyond—topics that resonate deeply with my own experiences. They explore how dreams, near-death experiences, and even premonitions might hint at a greater connection, a thread that ties us to something bigger. Watching it, I couldn’t help but think of Nana’s visit, of Steve’s sudden departure, and of the dreams that bridge the gap between what I know and what I feel.The short video doesn’t claim to have all the answers—no good exploration of the unknown does. Instead, it invites us to wonder, to consider that maybe our minds and spirits stretch further than we’ve been taught. For me, that’s a comforting thought. It’s a reminder of that 14-year-old girl who wanted to study parapsychology, who felt the world ripple with unseen possibilities. A Gentle Guide Through Life’s Final Moments - Ever Loved

I just got my 23andMe results back—turns out I’m 90% Anglo-Irish-Scottish. No real surprises there, considering I was born in England to an Irish mother and a Scottish father. But seeing it spelled out, my heritage quantified in percentages, has me thinking about lineage, ancestry, and I wanted to take a moment to honor the death rituals of the Irish. And what better day to reflect on Irish death traditions than St. Patrick’s Day?Now, St. Paddy’s (yes, Paddy, never Patty) is a day of revelry, rivers dyed green, and questionable decisions involving Guinness. But Ireland has a long and rich relationship with death, one that is woven into its culture through keening, wakes, and an almost reverent sense of humor about the whole thing.No one does death quite like the Irish. The traditional Irish wake is legendary—a gathering of family and friends, not just to mourn but to celebrate the life of the deceased. The body would often be laid out in the home, candles flickering, a steady flow of whiskey, tea, and stories. Grief and laughter sit side by side, as tales are told, songs are sung, and people drink deep from both sorrow and joy.There’s a kind of defiance in it, a refusal to let death steal the spirit of the one who’s passed. The wake is an acknowledgment: yes, they’re gone, but let’s send them off properly—with warmth, wit, and one last toast.Before the wake, there was the keening—an ancient practice where women would wail and lament over the body, a raw, heart-wrenching expression of sorrow. It was once a central part of mourning, a tradition passed down through generations, but the Church wasn’t a fan and did its best to stamp it out. Even so, echoes of keening remain in the way the Irish express grief—open, poetic, and unafraid of the depth of loss.Irish folklore is brimming with stories of the dead. The banshee, for one, is said to wail outside the homes of those about to pass, her cry an eerie herald of death. Then there’s Samhain, the Celtic festival marking the thinning of the veil between the living and the dead—Halloween’s spiritual ancestor.Even on St. Patrick’s Day, when the spirits in question are more likely to be found at the bottom of a pint glass, there’s an ever-present awareness of the past, of those who came before, and of the great, inevitable journey we all take.And let us not forget the irreverent sense of humor of the Irish—Father Ted comes to mind. We plan for so many things—why not our death?

As an end-of-life worker, I accept and serve people of all religions, meeting them where they are in their beliefs and traditions. But if I had to choose one path that resonates most deeply, I find myself drawn to the Tao. Some would argue it isn’t a religion at all—more a way of being, a philosophy that embraces the ebb and flow of life with acceptance rather than resistance.Recently, after a thought-provoking conversation about reality, technology, and the future of humanity, I revisited Zhuangzi’s famous <a data-mce-href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhuangzi_(book)#%22The_Butterfly_Dream%22" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhuangzi_(book)#%22The_Butterfly_Dream%22" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Butterfly Dream</a>. That led me to another of his stories, one that speaks powerfully to those who are grieving: Drumming on a Tub and Singing.In this tale, Zhuangzi’s wife has died, and rather than weeping in despair, he sits on the ground, drumming on a tub and singing. When asked how he can do such a thing, he explains that life and death are part of the same unfolding mystery, that grief is not about clinging to what was, but about moving with the rhythms of existence itself.For those mourning a loved one, this story offers something profound—not a call to suppress grief, but an invitation to see it through a different lens. What if, instead of resisting change, we honored the full cycle of life? What if we trusted in the vast, unknowable unfolding, where birth and death are not endpoints, but movements in a greater flow?This is not to say that loss doesn’t ache. It does. But perhaps, like Zhuangzi, we can find a way to meet it with something other than sorrow alone. "You lived with her, she brought up your children and grew old," said Huizi. "It should be enough simply not to weep at her death. But pounding on a tub and singing—this is going too far, isn't it?"莊子曰：不然。是其始死也，我獨何能無概然。察其始而本無生，非徒無生也，而本無形，非徒無形也，而本無氣。雜乎芒芴之間，變而有氣，氣變而有形，形變而有生，今又變而之死，是相與為春秋冬夏四時行也。 Zhuangzi said, "You're wrong. If I were to follow after her bawling and sobbing, it would show that I don't understand anything about fate. A few years back, I stumbled upon an intriguing exhibition at the Bristol Museum &amp; Art Gallery titled "Death: The Human Experience." Running from October 24, 2015, to March 13, 2016, this exhibition delved into the multifaceted ways humans perceive and handle death across different cultures and eras.
